custom – singapore airlines

The team at Smith Madden and the guys at Quadric have recently finished the 250m2 Singapore Airlines Silver Kris lounge at Brisbane International Airport, where the $340 million terminal upgrade is now complete.

Richard designed a new armchair for the lounge, featuring solid American walnut and upholstered in Quad Dapple from Kvadrat Maharam.

We received so much positive feedback on the chair, we’ve decided to include it in our range. Welcome Bellini, and thank you to Smith Madden for the opportunity to contribute to the project.

elvis in hospital

The King is long gone, but our popular Elvi range lives on, this time at Brisbane’s new and much improved Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Cox Rayner had the huge task of designing and specifying the exterior and interior, and Blok was called upon to provide quite a few pieces of public seating for various locations, including the food court and some relaxed breakout areas. Over 20 metres of freestanding Elvi banquettes were constructed and installed in custom-length sections, along with 22 custom bar stools and a collection of Kubric ottomans, upholstered in Laine Belllabode and Woven Images Knoll Alignment.

Congratulations to the team at Cox, and thank you to the PA Hospital – we look forward to working with you again.

blok @ BiD ’08 – truly was ‘the place to be’

QUTStudentBlok at BiD ’08 truly was ‘the place to be’ on Saturday 20 September.

Blok and QUT joined forces to create a display at Lightspace, described as a “crowded exhibition location” by Indesignlive. That’s an understatement! We clocked over 1000 attendees through the door, which exceeded expectations and provided a constant buzz of energy and a party-like atmosphere for the entire day.

It was great to see some familiar faces as Blok clients came through to check it out, but it was also an excellent opportunity to make the acquaintance of new people and introduce them to our product range.

Blok’s new pieces received plenty of compliments from the crowd, and gave people a place to relax, put their feet up, and view the inventive designs of QUT students while they filled in their ‘People’s Choice’ ballot. With the chance to win a gorgeous lulu ottoman, the competition became so popular we ran out of voting forms! Sorry if you missed out… maybe next time?

There was an extremely positive response to the student’s exhibited pieces, which were displayed in a highly professional manner and have genuine potential for further commercial development. We will be making an announcement in the near future, so stand by for a new and exciting product to hit the marketplace.

It was great to hear feedback from industry colleagues about Blok’s commitment to supporting students and local designers – thanks, guys, it’s important to us, and we look forward to continued collaboration in the future!

Some other comments were:

  • “This place has got a great vibe!”
  • “We heard on the buses that this spot was a must-see”
  • “The BEST chocolate bikkies!”
  • “LOVE the new aura table”
  • “We heard you had Little Creatures”

Thanks to all who attended, and we look forward to seeing you at the next Blok event. Make sure you have a look at our Blok BiD ’08 photo gallery to see if you can spot yourself.

Also, take a look at the Blok Bid ’08 launch pieces lola, lulu, aura, stella bench and luna.

QUT student blok

Blok Furniture is bridging the gap between the free-thinking student domain and the commercial reality of the design industry. A collaborative project between Blok and QUT Interior Design 3rd year students is to be launched at Brisbane In Design at the impressive Light St Exhibition space.

Blok recognised the need to develop sustainable relationships with emerging designers, and wants to support graduates as they commence their journey into the ‘real world’.

“We wanted to actively assist students by sponsoring a design competition where they have the opportunity to develop a viable prototype that could be manufactured and marketed to the wider design community”, says Richard Park, director of Blok. “Some competitions have a prize, but no actual long-term benefit for the participant. Thanks to InDesign, this project has been given a professional stage where the students can exhibit, network with potential employers and future colleagues, collaborate with a manufacturer, and if successful, gain financial benefit from their ingenuity.”

QUT Student groups have had the experience of designing and making a piece of furniture from recycled material in the first semester of 2008, and this collaborative competition gives them the opportunity to develop these experimental concepts into two dimensional sketches of a commercially viable product. Both the initial prototypes and developed sketches will be exhibited for judging by Brisbane InDesign attendees in a ‘Peoples Choice’ vote, to be combined with input from selected industry members. The winning groups’ piece will be developed by Blok into a viable 3D prototype and included in the their range, with the students receiving a commission on orders.

For BiD attendees, “QUT Student Blok” provides a rare insight into minds uncluttered by commercial constraints, displayed in an exciting new space that is sure to become a Brisbane landmark in the near future. There will be a distinctly ‘beergarden’ flavour to the refreshments to quench thirsts and ease hunger pangs, ensuring this exibit is on the BiD ‘not to missed’ list.

“Blok sees this event as part of an ongoing commitment to fostering new design talent in Brisbane,” says Richard. “We look forward to further collaborations with QUT students in the years to come

custom install – GoMA

One of our favourite custom clients, GoMA, recently opened their doors to “Picasso & his Collection” – and we’re excited about what’s inside. Matisse, Renoir, Miro, Braque and Blok! Richard collaborated with the Interiors team on a range of custom seating solutions for the exhibition, and the client was very happy with the result (which was delivered on a very tight lead time). Two zigzag ottomans and a circle sectioned ottoman upholstered in economical Austex vinyl provide flexible public seating that can be reconfigured for a variety of events and usages. The exhibition features over 100 works from Picasso’s personal collection plus more than 80 works by the artist himself. So, make sure you pay GoMA a visit before the show closes on the 14th September, as this is the first time the collection has been seen outside of Europe, and is exclusive to Brisvegas. And don’t forget to visit blok for your own custom ‘work of art’.
